Kats taking lead into final round of CUSA Championship

MAGNOLIA — The Sam Houston women's golf team fired under par for the second straight day on Tuesday and will take a two-shot advantage into Wednesday's final round of the Conference USA Championship at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club. Â
Sam Houston led by a shot after Monday's first 18 holes and added another shot of cushion over second-place NM State after shooting a three-under par team score of 285 on Tuesday. Â
The Bearkats and Aggies separated themselves from the rest of the field in Round 2 and are the only remaining teams under par for the event. The Kats (-5) and Aggies (-3) hold a comfortable lead over third-place UTEP who checks in at +9 as a team. Â
NM State's Emma Bunch continues to lead the individual leaderboard at –6 overall after a second-round score of 70; however, SHSU's Jenn David and Jennifer Herbst are are not far behind after carding matching rounds of 72-69 on Days 1 and 2. Â
Herbst started off red hot with birdies on each of her first four holes of the day to make the turn at –4 for the round and got things to –5 with a birdie on the Par-5 10th hole before giving two shots back to the field with a double bogey at No. 16, her only bogey of the day.Â
David, meanwhile, turned in a clean card at the end of the day which included three birdies and no bogeys. She had seven straight pars to open the day before scoring a birdie at No. 8 and followed later with birdies at Nos. 14 and 16 to get to –3 for the day.Â
Grace Jin followed her opening round of 68 with a 74 and checks in at –1 and in a tie for fifth place after Round 2, making the Kats the only team in the field with three players under par at this point of the week. Â
Zulaikah Nasser joined the fray for Round 2 and turned in the Kats' fourth scoring round of the day with a 73, while Viera Permata Rosada finished with a score of 74 and sits in a tie for 11th overall entering Wednesday's finale.Â
The Bearkats are scheduled to tee off the final round of the CUSA Championship on Wednesday beginning at 9:00 a.m.Â
Sam Houston will be paired with NM State and UTEP for the second straight day.Â
