ARLINGTON — Sam Houston turned in a perfect day on Friday and advanced to the regional finals at the NCAA Tournament in the International Training & Research Center.
The Kats took down fellow Conference USA foe Louisiana Tech 2-1 in their opening match at the Arlington Regional before toppling top seeded North Carolina A&T 2-1 to advance to the finals.
The Bearkats will await the winner of Louisiana Tech and North Carolina A&T in their elimination match Saturday. Sam Houston will get two cracks at advancing to the NCAA Championship due to the double-elimination style of the tournament.
Kicking off the day against Louisiana Tech, Sam Houston got an early win in the five-person team matches thanks to a huge score of 232 pins from Noey Sartong. The Bulldogs knotted it up at a game apiece after the total pinfall matches, but the Kats came in clutch in the baker matches, 4-2, to secure the opening round win.
The following round against North Carolina A&T started off much the same for the Kats, scoring a win in the five-person team matches. The Bulldogs would even it at a win each after the total pinfall matches. Needing to win the baker matches once again, Denise Blankenzee would come up with a massive 230 pin closeout game five to punch the Kats' ticket into the regional finals.
