
Cerda named to All-CUSA first team

DALLAS - Paula Cerda has been announced as the Sam Houston women's tennis program's first All-Conference USA performer following the Bearkats inaugural season in the league, per a release from league officials put out on Wednesday morning.Â
The senior from Spring, Texas, was voted as one of the eight players on the 2024 All-CUSA singles first team squad by the league's head coaches this past weekend.Â
Rolling up a 12-4 dual match record this season representing the Kats in the Nos. 1 and 2 singles positions, Cerda completed her two-year career as a Bearkat with a 23-11 singles record.Â
Including fall tournament play in 2023-24, Cerda's overall singles record was 16-10. In dual-match play she compiled a 5-3 record at the No. 1 position and a 7-1 mark in the No. 2 slot.Â
Joining Cerda on the All-CUSA singles first team are Oyinlomo Quadre, Valery Gynina and Ekaterina Khairutdinova Mandelikova from FIU; Olga Bienzobas from Louisiana Tech and Maria Juliana Parra Romero and Ester Lovato from Liberty.Â
Other CUSA award winners included coach of the year Katarina Petrovic of FIU, Player of the Year Ekaterina Khairutdinova of FIU, Newcomer of the Year Irene Artigas of Jax State and Freshman of the Year Valery Gynina of FIU.Â
Cerda joined the Bearkat tennis program as a transfer after two seasons at Stephen F. Austin. Her first year at Sam Houston as a junior she led the 2023 team with 16 dual-match and tournament singles victories. Â
The daughter of Oscar and Cecilia Cerda, Paula was an All-Region performer for Klein High School.
