Kats drop first CUSA match

KENNESAW, Ga. — A miscue right before the end of the first half proved to be the difference as Sam Houston fell 2-1 to Kennesaw State on Sunday at Fifth-Third Bank Stadium.

The loss was the Bearkats' first in Conference USA action after a 2-0 start to league play. It also snapped a three-game winning streak.

The Owls scored first just eight minutes into the match. Kennesaw State was aggressive from the get-go with six shots on goal in the first half.

Sam Houston (5-4-2) has not wavered in the face of adversity this season and came firing back. Jasmine Marquez placed a beautiful pass ahead to Indigo Sims who raced forward to punch in her third goal of the year in the 25th minute.

Both teams traded jabs for the next 19 minutes before the Owls were able to sneak a ball past Kat goalkeeper Cassia Souza, who had come out to challenge, for the eventual game-winning goal.

Sam Houston took 10 shots in the second half but was never able to get another equalizer.

The Bearkats return to action Oct. 6 at Louisiana Tech.
