HUNTSVILLE — Orange and black lightning struck early and often Saturday night as Sam Houston finished its last home match of the season with a bang.
The Bearkats scored what would prove to be the game winner in the third minute of a 3-0 victory over UTEP in Conference USA action at Pritchett Field. Sam Houston added two more goals in the second half to improve to 6-4-2 overall and 3-1-1 in league play.
Sam Houston wasted little time getting on the board Saturday.
Senior Pam Murray perfectly placed a free kick into the right side of the box to set up the score. Gabrielle Gipson used her 5-10 frame to out jump the Miners and ripped a header into the top right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
Just like that, less than three minutes into the match, the Bearkats had the lead. That was in stark contrast to the previous two matches that saw the only goals scored in a 1-0 win over Louisiana Tech and a 1-0 loss to Western Kentucky come in the closing minutes.
Sophomore Indigo Sims had a breakaway goal in the 64th minute as the outraced a defender into the box and sent the ball past the keeper into the right middle of the net. The final score came with just over 10 minutes left when a pass from Gipson to an open Tiana Johnson, who netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Katie Bahn had another solid performance in goal for the Bearkats. She finished with two saves while posting her fourth clean sheet of the season.
Sam Houston hits the road Thursday to face FIU in Miami at 7 p.m.
