MIAMI — Gabrielle Gipson has been on fire, and the Bearkats have been reaping the benefits.
Gipson scored her second goal in as many matches to lift Sam Houston to a 1-0 victory over FIU in Conference USA play on Thursday evening. The Kats (7-4-2, 4-1-1) evened their all-time record against the Panthers at 2-2 and remained in contention for a league regular season championship with the win as they currently sit third behind Liberty (4-0-2) and WKU (4-0-1).
Gipson didn't know it at the time, but she scored what would prove to be the game winner before the two teams had time to hardly break a sweat. She found the back of the net in the seventh minute which was plenty for the defense.
Gipson scored the game winning goal in a 1-0 win over UTEP on Oct. 11 and assisted another goal.
Sam Houston came into Thursday's game with three shutouts in its last four matches. Keeper Katie Bahn had only one save as the Kats posted their fifth shutout of the season and won for the fourth time in five games, allowing just one goal during that stretch.
Sam Houston will hope on a flight to travel to Missouri State for its next match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
