HUNTSVILLE — Taylor Vance scored her first goal of the season at the opportune time to lead Sam Houston to a 1-0 victory over Middle Tennessee State in Conference USA action on Thursday night at Pritchett Field.
Â
The Bearkats (5-3-1) remained undefeated in conference play with the win, improving to 2-0-1. Sam Houston has not lost in four consecutive matches, going 3-0-1 during that stretch.
Â
Both teams put on a defensive exhibition for most of the evening before the Kats finally broke through. Tiana Johnson tapped a corner kick to Vance who placed the ball perfectly over keeper Demi Gronauer's outstretched arms for the game winner in the 79th minute.
Â
The match was a defensive battle in the first half as well as neither team could find a way to end the scoreless deadlock.
Â
Sam Houston managed just one shot on goal off the foot of Johnson, but Gronauer made a save. The Blue Raiders faired a little better with three shots on target only to see Kat keeper Katie Bahn, who finished with five saves, deny each opportunity.
Â
The Bearkats have two home matches left this season beginning Sunday when Western Kentucky comes to Huntsville for a 1 p.m. kick. The match will be streamed in ESPN+.
