HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston outhit rival SFA on Wednesday at Bearkat Softball Complex, but the Lumberjacks got the one that made one that mattered most.
A lead-off double in the top of the third inning resulted in the game-winning run as SFA (2-3) topped the Bearkats (3-3) 1-0. The Lumberjacks were able to get the run home in the top of the third thanks to a sacrifice bunt.
Sam Houston had a solid chance to tie the game or take the lead in the bottom of the third when
Kristyn Whitlock led off with a single and moved to second on a one-out single by
Brodie Quinlan that scooted past the pitcher on the infield. SFA got out of the jam with a grounder and a popup.
Kyla Heine and Quinlan got a two-out rally in the fifth with back-to-back singles off Lumberjack starter Alexis Telford, who then got a grounder back to the circle to close the frame.
Sam Houston had one final opportunity to tie the game in the sixth when
Bella Perez ripped a two-out double to left center. She moved to third on a passed ball, but once again Telford danced her way out of the threat.
Abigail Young threw well for the Kats, allowing just one run in three innings to drop to 0-1 on the season.
Tiffany Sanchez and
Makenzi Jenkins tossed two scoreless innings each in relief.
The Bearkats hit the road to take part in the Louisiana Classics on Friday and Saturday in Lafayette. Sam Houston opens with former Southland Conference foe Central Arkansas on Friday at 9 a.m.
