Kats lose two to open Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. — The Sam Houston softball team opened the Louisiana Classics Tournament with a pair of losses on Friday at Lamson Park.

The Bearkats fell to both Central Arkansas and Ole Miss. The opener against the Bears almost went extra innings before a walk-off fielder's choice swung the game in UCA's favor while the Rebels were able to pick up a run-rule victory.

Central Arkansas 2, Sam Houston 1

Sophomore Amy Abke was solid in the circle in the opener of the tournament as she held off the Bears until the bottom of the seventh inning. She allowed just seven hits and two runs but fell to 1-2 on the season.

Sam Houston struck first with a Samantha Greater RBI single that brought home Brodie Quinlan, who reached base on a double to left field in the third inning.

The Bears were scoreless until the seventh when they capitalized on a Bearkat error and later scored on a fielder's choice to tie it. UCA walked it off with another fielder's choice to second base to bring home the winning run.

Ole Miss 10, Sam Houston 0 (5 inn.)

Makenzi Jenkins took her first loss in a Bearkat uniform as Sam Houston fell to Ole Miss by run rule. Jenkins started for the Kats, going two innings and allowing four runs on five hits. Freshman Tiffany Sanchez came on in relief and gave up four more runs in the third.

Kendall Daniel closed out the game, pitching three innings and allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two of the 12 batters she faced.

The Bearkats close out the tournament Saturday against NIU at 8 a.m. and host Louisiana at 1 p.m.
