HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston softball team put together a historic 12-run third inning to fuel a 13-0 shutout over Bryant in five innings, closing out Day 2 of the 2025 Bearkat Classic on Saturday at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Sam Houston tallied 12 total hits in the game, with nine coming in the third inning's offensive explosion, including a pair of home runs. The effort pushed the Kats to 2-0 on the young season, the first time since 2009 the team has started a season with consecutive wins.
The 12 runs in the frame tied the most in a single inning in program history, equaling the total the Kats put up vs Texas Southern in 2010.
Freshman Hallie Day and transfer Samantha Graeter had the big swings of the frame, starting with Day's pinch-hit grand slam in her first collegiate at-bat to give the Kats a 9-0 lead and truly break the game open. Graeter followed later in the frame with a 3-run shot, her first homer as a Bearkat and her second extra-base hit of the inning.
The evening wasn't all about the offense as the Bearkat pitching staff held Bryant to just one hit and four total base runners. Freshman hurler Tiffany Sanchez delivered a strong start in the circle, allowing just one hit in four innings to earn the first win of her career. Makenzi Jenkins closed out the game with one inning of relief, striking out three of the four batters she faced.
In all, five Kats recorded RBIs, led by four apiece from Day and Graeter. Allie Saville and Kristyn Whitlock also had two apiece, Brodie Quinlan added one as well.
The Bearkat Classic continues Saturday with four games on the slate, starting with Tulsa facing Bryant to lead off the day at 10:30 a.m.
