DALLAS – Sam Houston held an early advantage, but the DBU bats quickly got going as the Patriots completed a series sweep by handing the Bearkats a 14-4 loss in eight innings on Saturday afternoon at Horner Ballpark.
The Kats (8-32, 2-13 CUSA) took their first lead off the weekend with two runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Grant Nottlemann and Sam Lee, but DBU (28-11, 11-4 CUSA) responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning and carried the lead to the finish to run its win streak to nine in a row.
Ty Marthiljohni blasted a 2-run homer in the fourth and Hunter Autrey had a pair of singles to highlight a 6-hit day for the Bearkat offense. But once again the powerful Patriot offense was too much as they blasted five more homers, three from Nate Humphreys, and finished with nine extra-base hits in the game.
Ryan Peterson battled his way through 3.2 innings and struck out three hitters but could not make it out of the fourth inning in taking his eighth loss of the year. Freshmen Connor Mondey and Tate Hickman each saw time on the bump, as did relievers Devin Bennett and Zak Johnson.
DBU starter Ryan Borberg gave up four runs in 5.0 innings, but did not issue a free pass and punched out six hitters in 5.0 innings to earn the win.
