HUNTSVILLE — Indigo Sims scored off a deflected shot late in the first half to lead Sam Houston to a 3-2 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday evening at Pritchett Field.
The victory was the first of the season for the Bearkats (1-1-1) and the first in the orange and white for new head coach Kendall Ayers and her staff. Sam Houston was also playing its home opener after inclement weather forced the first home match against Houston to be canceled last week.
With the match tied at 2, Kelsey Villatoro ripped a shot that was saved by Islander keeper Hayven Harrison. The ball ricocheted straight to Sims who punched it past Harrison for the game winner in the 86th minute.
The Kats took the lead right out of the gate when Tiana Johnson wasted no time taking a pass from Jasmine Marquez and powered it past Harrison four minutes into the contest. TAMU-CC tied it 12 minutes later, but Sam Houston wasn't done scoring in the half.
Kinsey Hill scored her first goal of the season to put the Kats up 2-1 in the 40th minute.
The Islanders tied it seven minutes into the second half, but both teams settled in and went the next 34 minutes scoreless before Sims' heroics.
Sam Houston returns to action on Sunday when another former Southland Conference opponent comes to Huntsville. The Kats will battle Lamar at 7:30 p.m.
