DALLAS – Sam Houston outside hitter Chloe Monson was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week on Monday, per a release from league officials.
Monson was named to the all-tournament team for the second straight weekend, leading the Bearkats to a pair of wins over HCU and ULM at the Bearkat Classic.
The San Antonio native averaged 4.07 kills per set for the week while swinging at a .244 clip on 135 tries. She also averaged 2.71 digs per set, registering a pair of double-doubles.
For the year Monson ranks second in CUSA with 4.02 kills per set, a mark which is third nationally among freshmen, and has five matches of 20 or more kills, including four of her last five outings. Her 229 total kills rank second in the nation, overall.
She opened the weekend with a 22-dig, 14-dig performance in a 5-set win over HCU on Thursday and followed with 14 kills and nine digs in Friday's match vs Georgia State. Monson closed the tournament with a 21-kill, 15-dig performance in a comeback victory over ULM on Saturday, hitting .390 on just 41 tries.
The Bearkat Classic closed out non-conference play for the Bearkats. They will now turn their attention to Conference USA play beginning Friday night at home when they play host to defending CUSA Tournament champion UTEP for the first of a pair of matches on the weekend.
