HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston took sole possession of second place in Conference USA with a 74–67 comeback victory over Missouri State on Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats (15–7, 8–3 CUSA) weathered a slow start after the Bears (15–9, 7–4 CUSA) built a 12-point lead midway through the third quarter. The Bearkats responded with relentless defensive pressure, forcing turnovers to swing momentum, taking the lead early in the fourth, and holding on down the stretch to secure the win.
Fanta Kone led the way with 19 points and eight assists, marking her seventh double-figure scoring performance in conference play. Deborah Ogayemi and Annika Corcoran each added 13 points, while Whitney Dunn chipped in 11 and Nyla Inmon finished with 10. It marked the fourth time this season Sam Houston has had four or more players score in double figures in league action.
Corcoran, Kone and Dunn each knocked down two shots from long range as Sam Houston finished with six three-pointers for only the second time in league play.
Sam Houston used a 14–2 run late in the third quarter to erase the deficit before closing the period with a 6–0 burst in the final 30 seconds, setting the tone for a dominant defensive fourth quarter.
The Bearkats forced 28 turnovers and converted them into 41 points, their highest points-off-turnovers total since nonconference play against Dallas. Sam Houston recorded 12 steals, led by Kone's seven, with Ogayemi and Dunn adding two each.
