WALKER TABBED CUSA'S TOP FRESHMAN OF WEEK
Since taking over starting point guard duties due to injuries, Jacob Walker has continued to shine for Sam Houston, and the true freshman was honored for his play this past week by the Conference USA office.
Walker was selected as the league's Freshman of Week for the second time this season after leading the Bearkats to a pair of closely contested home wins over Middle Tennessee and Jax State. He averaged 18.5 points by shooting 43.5 percent from the floor and a perfect 100 percent, 15 for 15, from the free throw line.
FIRST MEETING WITH FIU GOES SAM'S WAY
The Bearkats used lockdown defense and made key shots to deal FIU a 76-63 loss at the Ocean Bank Convocation on Jan. 17.
Freshman Jacoby Coleman came off the bench to lead the Kats in scoring with 14 points on 6 for 12 shooting from the floor as the team connected on 44 percent of its shot attempts. Coleman hit back-to-back 3-pointers that put Sam Houston up 63-50 with just under seven minutes left in the game.
Po'Boigh King also connected on two of the Bearkats' 10 3s in the contest to finish with 21 points, and Veljko Ilic powered through a leg injury to chip in 11 points and four rebounds. Justin Begg, Kashie Natt and freshman Jacob Walker, who along with Coleman form the top scoring freshman duo in CUSA, all finished with nine points while Damon Nicholas Jr. yanked down a game-high 10 boards.
Sam Houston smothered the Panthers defensively. The Bearkats held them to just 29 percent shooting.
