HUNTSVILLE — When shots fall like they did on Thursday, Sam Houston is awfully hard to beat.
Â
The Bearkats opened with a 16-0 run and never looked back to bounce FIU 100-67 in Conference USA action at Johnson Coliseum. Sam Houston (20-8, 12-5 CUSA) shot an outstanding 60 percent from the field and was 10 for 16 from behind the arc to extend its winning streak to four.
Â
Jacob Walker was the Kats' leading scorer with 20, while Kashie Natt, who had a double-double with 13 rebounds, and Po'Boigh King each chipped in 18 points. Jacobe Coleman pitched in 12 points, CJ Beaumont scored a season-high 11 on 3 for 5 shooting from 3, and Damon Nicholas Jr. had 10.
Â
The game could not have started better for Sam Houston.
Â
King got the scoring started with a 3-pointer then the Kats got back-to-back-to-back acrobatic layups by Natt and Walker. Walker followed with another 3 before CJ Beaumont drilled consecutive long-range shots to push the lead to 19-2 after the Panthers finally scored their first basket.
Â
FIU (13-15, 6-11) began to claw back in it with a 5-0 run only to see King pull up for a 3, sink it and get fouled for a four-point play to push the lead back to 25-11 midway through the opening period. The Bearkats' largest lead of the half came at 50-29 on a layup by Veljko Ilic with less than a minute left.
Â
King scored five straight points to begin the second half as the onslaught continued. Jacobe Coleman hit a jumper, Matt Dann laid a couple off the glass, Damon Nicholas Jr. connected on a basket and Beaumont to give Sam Houston a 30-point lead at 75-45 at the 11:41 mark.
Â
Sam Houston will play its final home game of the season on Saturday when Missouri State comes to town for a 4:30 p.m. tip.
