RUSTON, La. — A long scoring drought in the second half doomed Sam Houston in an 87-78 loss to Louisiana Tech on Saturday at Thomas Assembly Center.
With an eight-point lead, the Bearkats went more than six minutes without scoring as the Bulldogs were able to snapped Sam Houston's seven-game winning streak. The loss comes one week after the Kats (16-8, 8-5 CUSA) dominated LA Tech (13-10, 6-6) 83-67 in Huntsville.
Po'Boigh King led shorthanded Sam Houston with 21 points which was playing without starting point guard Justin Begg, who suffered an injury in a win over UTEP on Wednesday. Freshmen Jacobe Coleman and Jacob Walker scored 18 and 16 points, respectively and Kashie Natt added 10.
The Bearkats opened the second period with a 10-4 run featuring a pair of 3s by King and Natt to increase its halftime lead to 48-42. King made another 3, and freshman Matt Dann, who scored eight, made a layup then had a block on the other end to make it 53-45.
The offense hit a wall as the Bulldogs used a 9-0 run to take a 57-53 lead as Sam Houston went over six minutes without scoring. Coleman finally made a 3 from the right side as the Kats played well enough defensively to keep LA Tech from opening it up.
The Bulldogs were able to keep a multiple possession lead. Walker trimmed it to one with just over six minutes left in the game by converting a three-point play.
The calls and the breaks went LA Tech's way down the stretch to end Sam Houston's three-game CUSA road win streak.
The Bearkats have some time off before heading to Georgia next Saturday to play Kennesaw State at 4 p.m.
