STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma State Cowboys scraped across a run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete a weekend sweep of Sam Houston with a 1-0 win on Sunday at O'Brate Stadium.
The teams had battled throughout the day but neither was able to draw blood until OSU (8-3) got a run home in the eighth when Ezra Essex scored from first base on a single by Campbell Smithwick which was compounded by the second Bearkat (4-7) error of the day on the play.
The run made a winner of Cowboy reliever Stormy Rhodes who struck out five hitters in 2.0 innings of relief of starter Mario Pesca. Noah Wech came on and retired the Kats in order in the ninth for his second save of the year, striking out two to give OSU pitchers 15 strikeouts for the day.
Kade Neuenschwander was tagged with the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year, despite the one run allowed being unearned.
Sam Houston out-hit the Cowboys by a 5-4 margin, but stranded nine men on base and did not have a hit with a man in scoring position. Cade Corcoran, Wes Baker and Jeric Curtis all reached base twice with a single and a walk.
On the mound, Collin Aloisio continued his strong start to his freshman season, allowing just two hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 5.0 scoreless innings before ultimately taking a no-decision.
Sam Houston had chances early on against Pesca, stranding five runners on the bases in the first two frames, including leading the bases loaded in the first. But Aloisio did his part, retiring 10 of the first 11 Cowboys he faced before ultimately working his way through the fifth, leaving a pair of OSU runners on the bases in the fifth before making his own exit following the inning.
The Kats had more chances as the game progressed, but left runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings before the Cowboys were finally able to crack the scoring column.
