Kats drop midweek at Baylor

Hunter Alvord and Cade Corcoran had two hits and an RBI apiece for the Kats (8-8), but the first seven Bearkat hits in the game were singles before back-to-back 2-out doubles by Easton Dean and Kirby Orth to plate the game's final run; meanwhile, the Bears (10-6) had six of their 15 hits go for extra bases, including three homers.
Jakob Holzer got his second midweek start of the year for Sam Houston and had four strikeouts but was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits in 2.2 frames of work. Cooper Harris, Noah Kendrick, Jonathan Anders and Connor Mondey combined for five more punchouts, giving the SHSU staff nine strikeouts for the game.
Baylor starter Cayden Baker got his first win of the year as the first of six Bear arms on a staff day, allowing one run in 2.0 innings before giving way to the bullpen.
The Kats manufactured a run in the opening inning on an RBI grounder by Wes Baker but Baylor immediately answered, tying it with two outs in the bottom of the first on a solo homer from Brady Janusek.
The Bears added on in each of next three innings, taking the lead on an RBI single by Travis Sanders in the second and pushing the lead to 5-1 in the third on a no-doubt solo homer by Tyce Armstrong, an RBI single by Brytton Clements and a Bearkat passed ball with a runner on third base.
The Kats put together a threat in the fourth with 1-out singles by Alvord and Corcoran but missed getting back on the scoreboard when Bear reliever Luke McLeod got Nathan Fink to fly out to the wall in straightaway center field and then ended the threat with a strikeout of Blake Brown.
Harris put up a zero in the fourth on the mound, but Baylor got its third solo home run of the game in the fifth when Hunter Snow greeted Kendrick with a blast to right field to push the lead to 6-1.
Sam Houston pushed three runs across to draw to within two at 6-4. Alvord and Corcoran each delivered RBI singles and the Kats had runners on the corners with nobody out, but Baylor reliever Cade McFaddin was able to kill the rally with a double-play grounder off the bat of Fink that scored a run but also cleared the bases.
Unfortunately, the Bearkats were unable to put up a shutdown inning in the bottom half of the frame as the Bears answered right back with a matching 3-spot. Hits from JJ Kennett and Pearson Riebock got BU going, but the Kats were their own worst enemy in the inning, committing a pair of errors on a grounder off the bat of Janusek that allowed a pair of runs to come in and set up the third.
Baylor biggest scoring inning of the night in the bottom of the eighth, capping the scoring with four runs on RBI hits from Janusek, Armstrong and Clements and the third Bearkat error of the night.
