MIAMI – Sam Houston baseball takes its show to the Sunshine State this weekend for a 3-game series at FIU, beginning Friday at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
All three games in Miami can be watched on ESPN+, or followed via live stats on Statbroadcast. Fans are also encouraged to follow @BearkatsBSB on X and Instagram.
Sam Houston put an end to a 4-game losing streak on Tuesday when it went on the road and used a 4-run sixth inning to knock off Lamar in Beaumont. This weekend they will take on the Panthers for the third series in as many years with the teams trading road sweeps in both 2024 and 2025.
FIU had split its first 14 games of the year, but the month of March has been unlucky to the Panthers as they enter Friday's series opener having lost eight games in a row after being swept last weekend at WKU and dropping its midweek contest on Wednesday at home to Miami.
Once again the Kats will give the ball to staff ace Ryan Peterson on Friday night as he looks to build on a brilliant start to his third season with Sam Houston. He goes into the series opener leading CUSA with 43 strikeouts, while ranking second in innings (28.0) and sixth in ERA (1.93).
The Kats saw three left-handed starters last weekend vs Jax State and will see at least two for the Panthers in Miami with Preston Prince and George Adams scheduled to get the ball in the first two games.
SERIES vs FIU
- The weekend will serve as SHSU's second-ever trip to FIU, having swept the Panthers late in 2024. That series included a memorable comeback in Game 2 where the Kats scored eight times with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to rally for a 16-13 win
- FIU returned the favor in 2025, closing the season with a sweep of the Bearkats at Don Sanders Stadium in the final series of the year
QUICK HITTERS
- Freshman Cade Corcoran goes into the weekend having reached base in 10 straight games and hitting safely in seven of his last eight with five multi-hit games in that span. He has raised his average from .209 to .301 in the last eight contests and reached base three times with a home run and two runs scored in the win over Lamar
- Sam Houston currently ranks second in CUSA with 47 stolen bases with 34 coming from the quartet of Jeric Curtis (9), Hunter Alvord (9), Caleb Cotton (8) and Jace Martinez (8). The Kats are the only team in CUSA with four players with eight or more steals
- Jace Martinez enters Friday needing one more hit for 100 in his career and six more steals for 50
