Bearkats take 6-3 victory over Middle Tennessee

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston took Game 2 against Middle Tennessee with a 6-3 win Saturday afternoon at the Bearkat Softball Complex.

Middle Tennessee (13-18, 3-8 CUSA) got off to a fast start in the top of the first inning, tallying two hits and an RBI against recently returned pitcher Abigail Young. Young recorded her first strikeout of the game to end the inning.

Sam Houston (23-25, 8-3 CUSA) responded quickly in the bottom half, scoring four runs. Freshman Sydney Prihoda delivered a single to center field that drove in two runs to give the Bearkats an early lead. The score remained 4-1 until Sam Houston capitalized on a baserunning opportunity in the third inning, highlighted by a heads-up play from Prihoda.

The Blue Raiders narrowed the gap in the fifth inning with a two-run frame. Young was relieved by Kendall Daniel after allowing a double and a single. Daniel recorded back-to-back outs to close the inning.

The Bearkats added insurance in the bottom half of the inning. Peyton Helmly doubled to put Sam Houston in scoring position, and Prihoda followed with a triple to bring Helmly home and extend the lead.

Sam Houston held off Middle Tennessee in the final innings, sealing the victory with a three-up, three-down seventh inning.

Young made her first start since February after recovering from a foot injury. She pitched four innings and recorded three strikeouts. Daniel allowed one hit and struck out two in relief.

Prihoda led the Bearkats offensively, finishing with three hits, three RBIs and the first triple of her collegiate career.

Sam Houston will conclude the series against Middle Tennessee at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Bearkat Softball Complex. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
