HOUSTON – Don't get ready. Stay ready.
The Sam Houston Bearkats were ready from the jump on Tuesday night and answered the call when it mattered in a 5-2 win over Houston at Schroeder Park, evening the Don Sanders Cup series with the Cougars at a game apiece.
Sam Houston (5-7) put a stop to a 4-game losing skid that started a week ago at home against Houston (7-5), but took full advantage of nearly every opportunity presented on Tuesday. The Kats had just three hits in the game, but all went for extra bases, while the offense took advantage of eight Cougar free passes and a pair of errors to win on Houston's home field for the first time since 2017.
Five Bearkat arms held the Cougars to seven hits with runs scoring only on solo homers from Carsten Sabathia and Dylan Maxcey. Noah Kendrick got the win with 3.0 innings of 1-run relief work, but it was freshman Zach Alarid who closed it out for his first career save in only his second career appearance.
The right-hander from Montgomery came in with the Kats holding onto a 5-2 lead and the sacks juiced with two outs, but he was able to coax a weak grounder from Maxcey to end the threat and went on to retire seven of the final eight Cougar hitters of the game to close it out.
Houston threw out all four arms it featured in last Tueday's win, including starter Alex Solis who retired all 15 hitters he faced a week ago; however, it was Solis who fell to 2-1 with the loss after allowing three runs in 3.1 innings of work.
Jeric Curtis was the only Bearkat hitter with multiple hits, registering a triple and a double, while Wes Baker continued to produce with a 2-run double in the third which gave the Kats a 2-1 lead. Blake Brown and Kirby Orth also picked up RBI in a 2-run sixth inning which provided SHSU key cushion.
Sabathia got the Cougars on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a solo homer off Bearkat starter Cooper Harris, but the Bearkats answered in the top of the third with a pair of runs to go in front. Orth and Hunter Alvord had each drawn walks ahead of Baker who rocketed a 2-run double off the right-center field wall.
An inning later the Bearkats tacked on another to up the lead to 3-1 when Curtis tripled with one out in the inning and came in to score three batters later on a passed ball with Ty Marthiljohni at the plate.
Kendrick followed 3.0 strong innings following Harris with a pair of zeros and got two more runs of support in the sixth as the Kats took advantage of a pair of Houston errors with RBI ground outs by Brown and Orth to push the lead to 5-1. Houston got a run back when Maxcey led off the bottom of the sixth with the second solo homer of the night for the Cougars, but Kendrick responded by retiring the next three hitters to keep it a 5-2 game.
Houston put together another threat in the seventh, loading the bases on a pair of walks and an infield single, but reliever Jonathan Anders got a strikeout of Blake Fields and Alarid followed by retiring Maxcey to keep any more runs from coming across.
