HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats handled their business on Friday, taking a pair of games from Prairie View at Don Sanders Stadium.Â
GAME 1
Sam Houston 4, Prairie View 1
Ryan Peterson continued his stellar start to 2026 and the Bearkat offense did just enough to take the series opener.Â
Peterson needed just 83 pitches to get through 6.0 shutout innings, punching out eight Panthers en route to picking up his first win of the season. Tyler Ryden bridged to the ninth with 2.0 frames of relief, while Zak Johnson earned his first save with a scoreless ninth.
The Kats got a pair of runs on the board in the second on an RBI double by Cade Corcoran and an RBI single from Blake Brown, and Hunter Alvord pushed the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single in the fifth, scoring Caleb Cotton who had two of the Kats' seven hits in the game.Â
Nathan Fink added a 2-out RBI double in the eighth after the Panthers had scored their lone run of the game in the top half of the inning.Â
GAME 2
Sam Houston 13, Prairie View 3 (7 inn.)
Sam Houston took full advantage of a bevy of Panther mistakes throughout the second game of the day, scoring multiple runs in five of seven innings to sweep the twinbill.Â
Caleb Cotton and Jeric Curtis each scored three times at the top of the lineup and both Nathan Fink and Blake Brown drove in a pair of runs as the Kats picked up its first run-rule win since the final series of the 2024 regular season.
Tate Hickman and Gabe Winans combined to strike out six in 7.0 innings with Winans earning his first collegiate win following 3.1 innings of relief with four punchouts of his own.
In all the Bearkats had 11 hits, but were aided by four PVAM errors, nine walks and three hit batters after an otherwise clean opener to the weekend earlier in the day.Â
The Kats struck for three runs apiece in each of the first two innings, including an RBI single by Corcoran in the opening frame. They led 8-1 after three innings and ultimately invoked the run-rule win with two runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Ty Marthiljohni and a wild pitch from PVAM reliever Dakari Hayes.
