Series vs the Blue Hens: 1-0
NEWARK, Del. — Sam Houston will close out the regular season with a pair of road games beginning Thursday with a matchup against Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Arena.
The game with the Blue Hens will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network and can also be heard online on the Bearkat Sports Network with Carlos Zimmermann on the call. The Bearkats will then head to Liberty for the final test before the CUSA championships get underway next week in Huntsville, Alabama.
Sam Houston played Delaware for the first time in program history in January, coming away with a 72-60 victory at Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville. Po'Boigh King led the team with 22 points, and Veljko Ilic posted his third consecutive double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Kats snapped an 0-3 start to CUSA action.
WALKER TABBED CUSA'S TOP FROSH FOR 2ND STRAIGHT WEEK
Walker continued to strive in a starting role for the Bearkats with a couple of 20-point scoring efforts to stretch the team's winning streak to five with a pair of victories over FIU and Missouri State over this past week. His performances earned him his second CUSA Freshman of the Week award in a row on Monday and third this season.
The true freshman from Memphis, Tennessee was 6 for 9 from the field for 20 points in a 100-67 victory over FIU on Wednesday and had three rebounds. He followed that with a team-high 23 points on 8 for 13 shooting in an 87-81 win against Missouri State on Saturday.
For the week, Walker averaged 21.5 PPG and 2.0 rebounds while shooting 63.6 percent as Sam Houston remains in second place in the league.
HISTORY MADE VS FIU
Sam Houston knocked off FIU 100-67 on Feb. 28 at Johnson Coliseum in a record-breaking performance. The 33-point margin of victory is the most in school history against a Division I opponent. The previous best was a 105-75 win at home against Central Arkansas on Feb. 20, 2016.
QUITE A TURNAROUND
The Kats began CUSA play 0-3 and have since won 13 of their last 15 contests, which included a seven-game winning streak, featuring home wins against Delaware, Western Kentucky, Louisiana Tech and UTEP and three on the road at Jax State, FIU and Missouri State. A road loss at Louisiana Tech ended the streak, but Sam has since won five in a row at Kennesaw State and at home against Middle Tennessee, Jax State, FIU and Missouri State.
FINDING WAYS TO WIN CLOSE GAMES
The Bearkats had their first losing season in conference play at 6-12 last season since 2012-13 when they went 8-10 in the Southland. Sam Houston was 0-4 in overtime games last season and 2-5 in games decided by 4 or less points. This season, the Kats are 3-1 games decided by 4 or less and has not played an OT contest.
