DBU gets rain-soaked, run-rule win on Saturday

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats could not overcome a pair of rain delays and a powerful DBU offense in a 14-3 loss in seven innings to the Patriots on Saturday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium.
Sam Houston (14-20, 4-10 CUSA) took an early 3-2 lead after a second-inning weather delay, but DBU (20-15, 10-4 CUSA) slammed two homers before the game's second delay and two more after the fact to clinch the weekend series with one more contest remaining on Sunday.
Nathan Fink homered and doubled for the Kats, following an RBI single by Hunter Alvord with a 2-bagger which brought Alvord home with a go-ahead run that had Sam Houston up by a run after three frames. But DBU quickly retook the lead in the following half of the frame and got its first big swing from Keaton Grady with a 2-run blast in the fourth that put the Patriots up 6-3.
Ryan Martin and Chayton Krauss each slammed solo shots in the fifth just prior to the game's second delay of the day. Following the 37-minute holdup, Adam Berghult capped the 6-run inning with a 3-run blast and RBI from Dylan Schlaegel and Martin got the Patriots in run-rule range in the top of the seventh.
Tyler Ryden struck out five and walked just one, but took the loss after allowing six runs. Jared Schaeffer grabbed the win with a 4.0-inning start thanks to the game going just seven frames, while Russ Smith tossed the final 3.0 innings with three punchouts for his second save.

Sam Houston will look to salvage the final game with Dallas Baptist on Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium. First pitch has been pushed up to 11:00 a.m. and is slated to be aired on ESPN+.
