Kats fall in series finale to DBU

HUNTSVILLE – DBU scored twice in the ninth and got a game-winning homer from Dylan Schlaegel in the top of the 10th to rally for a 5-4 win and close out a sweep of Sam Houston on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium.
Sam Houston (14-21, 4-11 CUSA) scored three times in the second and got another in the fourth on a solo homer from Wes Baker to build a 4-0 lead, but could not add on any more and the Patriots (21-15, 11-4 CUSA) took full advantage to earn their first sweep of league play.
The Kats held a 4-2 lead going into the ninth but found themselves in hot water quickly with the first two hitters of the inning reaching on a single and a walk. Reliever Zak Johnson got a flyout of Ben Tryon for the first out, but a Bearkat error on a stolen-base attempt proved to be the trick DBU needed in the inning as it scored one run and set the Patriots up to tie the game on a ground ball.
Sam Houston left a pair of runners stranded in the ninth and Schlaegel immediately put DBU in front for the first time when he led off the first extra frame with a no-doubt blast to left. He finished 4-for-5 in the game and drove in three of the Patriots' five runs, starting the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth before adding solo homers in the eighth and 10th. Â
Johnson took the loss to fall to 2-2 on the year. That came on the heels of a strong start from Tate Hickman who went a career-long 6.0 innings and tied his career high with six strikeouts, exiting the game with a 4-1 lead.
The Kats were able to get to DBU starter Ryan Borberg for four runs in 4.2 frames, but Jerrod Johnson held the SHSU bats quiet for 4.0 innings of relief before handing it off to winning pitcher Armani Knipper and Athan Kroll, who recorded the final out for his sixth save of the year.
