HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston led for the bulk of the way but were stung in the late innings once again as UTRGV handed the Bearkats an 8-5 loss in 10 innings on Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium.

The Bearkats (14-22) had taken a 5-4 lead on a 2-run homer by Cade Corcoran in the fifth inning and held that lead until the ninth when pinch hitter Anrew Taylor tied it with a solo blast on the first pitch of the frame and the Vaqueros went on to score three times in the 10^th to secure the win.

Ryan Franden and Jace Martinez had two hits apiece for Sam Houston, and Wes Baker joined Corcoran with long balls, but the Kats were just 2-for-18 with runners on base in the game and left 10 on base, including six after taking the lead. Caleb Cotton drew three walks and reached base four total times, collecting four of SHSU's six stolen bases in the game.

UTRGV, meanwhile, got back-to-back solo homers from Rocco Garza Gongora and Thomas Williams to open the game but did not have another big blast until Taylor's swing in the ninth. Andy Chapa led the offense with a 2-for-4 day and three RBI, including a 2-run single in the 10^th to give the road team the lead.

Gabe Winans got the start for the Kats but was unable to work out of the second inning before handing it over to Jonathan Anders who went on to allow just one run in 3.1 innings. Collin Aloisio followed and threw up three scoreless innings before surrendering the game-tying homer in the ninth and finishing with 4.0 innings, three strikeouts and no walks.

Noah Kendrick got tagged with the loss after allowing the winning run in the 10^th, while UTRGV's Harrison Thayer moved to 5-2 on the year with the win following 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Sam Houston will play its second midweek game of the week on Wednesday when it travels to Houston to take on Rice. First pitch from Reckling Park is set for 6:35 p.m. with the game to be aired on ESPN+.
