Kats drop close game at Rice

HOUSTON – The Sam Houston Bearkats held an early lead, but Rice immediately took it back and held on for a 5-3 win on Wednesday night at Reckling Park.
The Kats (14-23) got a 2-run homer by Cade Corcoran in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead, but Kutter-Gage Webb answered with a 3-run blast in the bottom of the inning for Rice (24-14) to retake the lead and the Owls' pitching staff racked up 13 strikeouts on the way to the win.
Rice pitching held Sam Houston to just three hits in the game, including a pair of hits after the third inning. Zach Alarid took the loss, while Evan Atchley moved to 5-1 for the Owls with 4.0 innings which included seven punchouts and Jackson Blank got his first save of the year with 2.0 scoreless innings.
The Owls got an early run on an RBI single from Paul Smith in the first inning, but Alarid minimized the damage and put up a zero in the second before the Bearkat offense made something happen in the top of the third.
Ryan Franden got the first run home in the inning, scoring Kirby Orth from third with a ground ball. Two batters later Corcoran blasted a 2-run homer out to left field, his second homer in as many games, to give the Kats a 3-1 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Rice answered in the home half of the inning with a 3-run homer from Kutter-Gage Webb to immediately retake the lead at 4-3. The Owls added another tally in the fourth on a squeeze bunt from JC Davis and that was all the home team needed as they held the Kats only one bunt single in the final six frames.
The Kats got scoreless relief innings from Cooper Harris and Mason Murphy, while Alarid took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year after 2.2 innings of work. Â Â

Sam Houston will now head to the Land of Enchantment for a 3-game CUSA series at NM State beginning Friday at Presley Askew Field. First pitch for Game 1 is set for 7:00 p.m. with all three games of the weekend scheduled to be aired on ESPN+. Â
