LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Sam Houston Bearkats will be looking to get off to a good start to the second half of Conference USA play this weekend when they travel to NM State for a 3-game series with the Aggies beginning Friday night at Presley Askew Field.
The Bearkats have dropped 11 in a row overall, including its last seven in CUSA play after being swept in consecutive weeks by Missouri State and DBU. The Aggies, meanwhile, have alternated series wins and losses and are coming off dropping two of three at WKU before taking a midweek from in-state rival New Mexico on Tuesday.
NMSU has been dramatically better on its home turf, going 14-5 at home while being just 2-14 in games away from Askew Field. Â
Each game this weekend is scheduled to be aired on ESPN+ with Adam Young and Marcel Renteria providing the call.

SERIES vs the AGGIES
- Sam Houston and NM State are tied 5-5 in the all-time series
- The programs had never met prior to the 2022 WAC Tournament, but have been league rivals in both the WAC and CUSA since that season
- Sam Houston won its only series in Las Cruces, taking the first two games of a weekend series in 2024 before the Aggies won on a walk-off homer in Sunday's finale
NOTES
- Ryan Peterson is set to make his 10th start of the season in the series opener. The junior righty is the only pitcher in CUSA to have logged at least 5.0 innings with five or more strikeouts in all nine starts this season
- Peterson goes into Game 1 vs NMSU with 73 punchouts and a 2.26 ERA on the year. With 27 more strikeouts this season he would become only the sixth Bearkat in program history with 100 Ks in a season and join Heath Donica (109 in 2017) and Hayden Wesneski (110 in 2019) as the only SHSU pitchers to do so since 1974
- The Bearkats have had a power surge of late with five home runs in their last four games, including two apiece in that span from freshmen Wes Baker and Cade Corcoran. They have 10 total extra-base hits in the last three contests after 12 in the previous seven contests
