Â
The Kats enter the weekend having won six of their last eight games dropping its midweek, 15-14, to No. 4 Texas on Tuesday and find themselves squarely in the mix for a strong seed at the upcoming Conference USA Tournament which will also be held in Kennesaw.
Sam Houston currently sits in a 3-way tie for sixth place with WKU and NM State, each teams who the Kats own series wins over. KSU, meanwhile, is just a game back in the standings with series against league leaders Jax State and Missouri State still remaining in the league's final two weeks.
Â
The Owls have dropped four straight league series since its sweep of Delaware, going 3-9 within the league in that span, including in Miami to FIU in early April.
SERIES vs the OWLS
- Kennesaw State leads the all-time series 3-0 after sweeping the first-ever series between the programs in 2025 in Huntsville
- This weekend will mark Sam Houston's first-ever games in the State of Georgia
NOTES
- The Bearkats enter the weekend having won 6 of their last 8 games dropping its midweek, 15-14, to No. 4 Texas on Tuesday
Â
- The Bearkats have homered in 12 of their last 13 games with 20 total in that span. They had just 16 long balls in the first 33 games of the season
- The Kats exploded for 14 runs against Texas on Tuesday, the most runs put up since scoring 16 at FIU on May 11, 2024 and the most-ever runs scored by the Bearkats against a nationally-ranked opponent
Â
- The bulk of that production came from the freshman duo of Wes Baker and Kirby Orth. The pair had 3 hits apiece and combined for 10 RBI. Orth provided a go-ahead, 2-run homer in the ninth while Baker homered twice and set a new SHSU single-game record for a freshman with 7 RBI. It was only the 12th time in program history a player has had 7+ RBI in a game
Â
- Sam Houston enters the weekend with exactly 100 stolen bases on the year. That mark leads CUSA and has the Kats over the century mark in swipes for the second time in 4 seasons. The Kats have only hit the century mark in steals twice since 1987 with 102 steals in both 2017 and 2023
Â
- They have 4 players - Jeric Curtis, Hunter Alvord, Jace Martinez and Caleb Cotton - with 15+ steals, led by Curtis' 21. With 9 more steals, Curtis would become just the fifth player in Bearkat history with 30+ steals in a season and the first since Bryce Johnson set the program's Division I record with 33 in 2017
- Ryan Peterson added to his resume last week when he was named a semifinalist for the National Pitcher of the Year Award, given out by the College Baseball Foundation. Earlier this season he was named to the Baseball America Midseason Watch List and to Perfect Game's Midseason All-America third team. He is among just 15 arms selected from around the nation for BA's team and is joined by Liberty's Ben Blair as 2 of the 3 pitchers selected from non-Power 4 leagues
Â
- Strikeouts were a problem for the Bearkat offense early in the year with the team punching out 10+ times in 13 of the first 18 games of the year; however, the offense only reached double-digit in Ks 7 times in the last 27 games entering this weekend, including once in Sunday's series clincher vs MTSU. It was the least strikeouts in a single game for the Kats since May 12, 2023 when they had just one in the series opener vs UT Arlington
Â
- Collin Aloisio went 3.0 strong innings of relief on Sunday vs MTSU, becoming the fifth Bearkat pitcher this season to record a save
Â
- Sam Houston has affectionately deemed its group of freshmen the "Baby Kats" and has leaned heavily on that group this year. Cade Corcoran, Wes Baker and Kirby Orth have combined for 13 homers and 30 extra-base hits, while Collin Aloisio, Mason Murphy, Cooper Harris, Gabe Winans and Zach Alarid have combined to throw 11.5.1 of the team's 385.0 innings on the year
