HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston scored four times in the fourth and got 6.0 shutout innings from Tate Hickman on Sunday afternoon, securing a sweep of Delaware with an 8-1 win at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Kats (23-29, 12-15 CUSA) used that win, along with a loss by NM State to Missouri State earlier in the day, to secure a berth in the upcoming CUSA Tournament to be held in two weeks in Kennesaw, Ga.
Ryan Franden, Caleb Cotton and Sean Bazmore had two hits apiece on a 10-hit day for the home team. Bazmore scored a pair of times, as did Kirby Orth who blasted a 2-run homer in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Hickman, meanwhile, needed just 84 pitches to work his way through 6.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts and only four hits allowed. He got double-play grounders to end each of the first three innings of the game and ultimately moved his record to 2-2 with the win.
Zak Johnson, Collin Aloisio and Mason Murphy each pitched an inning of relief with Murphy striking out the side in the ninth.
The Kats got runs across in both the first and third innings on RBI from Caleb Cotton and Jeric Curtis before opening it up with four runs in the fourth. Hunter Alvord got the inning going with a solo home run to lead off the frame, his seventh of the year. Each of the next three Bearkat hitters reached base and Jace Martinez picked up an RBI on a sac fly before SHSU pushed across two more on consecutive wild pitches with Curtis at the plate.
The 6-0 lead was enough for the Bearkat pitching staff, who only allowed one run in the top of the eighth on an RBI infield single by Jeremy Wolf, however, Orth got that run back and then some when he took reliever Nicholas Biolotto deep on a 3-1 pitch in the bottom of the inning.
