BEAUMONT — Sam Houston continued its strong defensive start to the season by earning a scoreless draw on the road at Lamar on Sunday evening.

Both teams were limited on the offensive attack as the Bearkats moved to 0-0-2 on the season. Sam Houston battled Oklahoma State to a 1-1 draw in the season opener on Thursday, with Gabrielle Gipson scoring on a free kick.

Keeper Hannah Stipp had seven saves against the Cowgirls and followed that performance with six more to shutout the Cardinals at the LU Soccer Complex.

Lily Sargent-Burns and Sara Benton each recorded two shots on goal against Lamar, while Ellie Morgan had one.

Sunday's draw snapped a six-match losing streak to Lamar dating back to the 2021 season, when the two teams were members of the WAC.

The last time the Kats defeated the Cardinals came in a 4-3 upset in the opening round of the Southland Conference Tournament during the 2021 spring season, which was moved from the fall because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Seventh-seeded SHSU stunned second-seeded Lamar in overtime at the LU Soccer Complex before the two programs moved to the WAC for the 2021-22 season.

Sam Houston will take a short break before heading to College Station to face Texas A&M on Saturday at 7 p.m.
