Bearkats shut out McNeese

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston battled through a hard-fought, back-and-forth match Sunday afternoon, earning a 1-0 shutout victory over McNeese at Pritchett Field.
The Bearkats (3-2-3) and Cowgirls traded chances throughout the opening half, with McNeese holding a 9-6 advantage in shots. Neither team was able to break through before halftime.
Sam Houston came out of the break pushing for the opening goal and continued to pressure the Cowgirls throughout the second half.
In the 80th minute, Ashtyn Magnuson found the back of the net inside the box after receiving a perfect pass from Siera Herbert. The goal marked Magnuson's second of the season and gave the Bearkats the lead with 10 minutes remaining.
Herbert led the Bearkats offensively with four shots, including three on goal. Ellie Morgan provided an offensive spark off the bench, recording three shots with one on target. Kaitlyn Vance, Lily Sargent-Burns and Sara Benton each added a shot on goal.
Sam Houston finished the match with 12 shots, putting eight on target.
Goalkeeper Hannah Stipp came up big throughout the afternoon, recording a season-high 10 saves to secure her first shutout of the season.
The victory marked the second consecutive season the Bearkats have defeated the Cowgirls. Sam Houston improved to 14-9 all-time against McNeese.
The Bearkats will take a short break before returning to Pritchett Field on Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. to face Texas A&M-San Antonio.
