Kats roll past Texas A&M-San Antonio

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston exploded for seven goals Monday night, rolling past Texas A&M-San Antonio 7-0 at Pritchett Field.
The Bearkats (4-2-3) controlled the match from the opening whistle, recording 27 shots and 20 shots on goal while limiting the Jaguars to no shots throughout the contest. Sam Houston also held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Ashtyn Magnuson opened the scoring in the sixth minute, finding the back of the net off an assist from Kelsey Villatoro to give the Bearkats an early 1-0 advantage.
Sam Houston continued to pressure the Jaguars and doubled its lead in the 28th minute when Ellie Morgan capitalized on a rebound off the TAMU-San Antonio goalkeeper, poking the ball into an empty net.
The Bearkats carried a 2-0 lead into halftime before adding five goals in the second half.
Gianna Gomez extended the lead in the 50th minute, heading home a cross from Morgan to make it 3-0. Less than 10 minutes later, Magnuson scored her second goal of the night after receiving a cross from Siera Herbert.
Herbert added a goal of her own in the 63rd minute to push the Bearkats' advantage to 5-0.
Jasmine Dybala added another goal in the 75th minute, scoring off an assist from Natalie Sippos. Hannah Bolin capped the scoring in the 87th minute, poking in a rebound following a missed shot by Lila Millward.
Magnuson led the Bearkats with two goals on three shots, putting all three attempts on target. Herbert finished with a goal and an assist while Morgan recorded a goal and an assist.
Dybala and Bolin each added a goal, while Gomez also found the back of the net. Villatoro and Sippos each recorded an assist.
Sam Houston's offensive attack produced 27 shots, with 20 finding the target. Sara Benton led the team with four shots, while Magnuson, Herbert and Lila Millward each recorded three.
Goalkeeper Samantha Rank played all 90 minutes and did not face a shot, earning the shutout for the Bearkats.
Monday's match marked the first meeting in program history between Sam Houston and Texas A&M-San Antonio. The Bearkats opened the all-time series with a 7-0 victory.
The seven-goal performance marked Sam Houston's highest-scoring game of the season.
The Bearkats will now turn their attention to conference play, opening their league schedule Saturday at 7 p.m. against Kennesaw State.
