Bearkats remain undefeated against the Tigers

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston took over Pritchett Field to remain undefeated against Texas Southern with a 3-1 victory Sunday night.

The Bearkats (2-1-3) dominated possession for the majority of the match, striking first when freshman Ashtyn Magnuson scored her first collegiate goal from 20 yards out in the 10th minute. Taylor Vance added another goal late in the first half on an 18-yard cross for her first goal of the season.

Sam Houston recorded 10 shots in the first half compared to four from the Lady Tigers. The Bearkats finished the night with 25 shots, including 11 on goal.

Goalkeeper Hannah Stipp recorded eight saves in her fourth game of the season, keeping the Lady Tigers scoreless through the first half.

In the second half, Natalie Sippos scored her first goal as a Bearkat on a penalty kick to push Sam Houston's lead to 3-0. The Lady Tigers managed to push up the field in the final minute and score to close the gap.

Sam Houston remains undefeated against the Lady Tigers after last defeating Texas Southern 6-0 in 2013 at Pritchett Field. Sunday's match marked the first time since 2004 that the Bearkats allowed the Lady Tigers to score.

The Bearkat offense was led by Kelsey Villatoro, who recorded six shots, all of which went just over the goal. Lily Sargent-Burns added four shots, all on goal, while Vance recorded three shots. Ashtyn Magnuson, Siera Herbert, and Solae Young each finished with two.

Sam Houston will head south to take on Houston on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Carl Lewis International Complex.
