Isaiah Simmons began coaching the throwing events at Sam Houston in September 2022.
Simmons took over the coaching duties of the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Metro throwers in August 2021. He was a part of the 2022 NEC coaching staff of the year and 2022 NEC women’s indoor champions. On the men’s side, Simmons coached the NEC male athlete of the year and indoor weight throw champion. He also coached the NEC male indoor field event MVP who went on to break the school record in the weight throw and rank second in the shot put. The knights continued to win multiple season awards in community service and academics. Simmons earned his Masters in Sports Management while coaching for the knights.
Coach Simmons joined the Florida State University staff in August of 2019 as Operations Assistant to director of field events/throws coach Dorian Scott. Among a variety of assigned tasks, he has compiled and prepared season-long training programs for the throws group, assisted in the recording and monitoring of daily practices and competitions and been involved in all aspects of on-campus recruiting. The Seminoles won the 2020 Men’s Indoor ACC Championship prior to the cancellation of the 2020 season. Prior to his arrival in Tallahassee, Simmons spent two seasons (2017-19) as the throws coach of NCAA Division II Concordia University Irvine (Calif.) where his athletes established new school records in the women’s javelin, men’s weight throw and women’s hammer, in addition to enjoying unparalleled success at the PacWest Conference Championship level.
Simmons began his coaching career on the high school level in his home state of Virginia, serving simultaneously as the throws coach at his alma mater, Woodbridge High as well as neighboring Osbourn Park High, while substitute teaching at both Prince William County schools. In his one season at the helm he sent multiple athletes on to earn Virginia 6A all-state honors.
Before embarking on a coaching career, Simmons starred at the University of Miami from 2013-16, where he set still-standing school records in the shot put (indoors and outdoors), and ranks No. 2 all-time in the discus. A four-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion in the shot put, he earned seven All-ACC honors and capped his career in 2016 by qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. A seven-time All-ACC selection he advanced to the finals 11 times between the shot put, discus, hammer and weight throw.
He graduated with his bachelors from the University of Miami in 2016.
Simmons enjoyed a celebrated career at Woodbridge High, winning seven state titles (five shot put; two discus) and still holds the Virginia state record in the shot put (68-0) and previously held the state discus record (196-8). He earned multiple All-American and All-Met honors and was Virginia’s 2011 Gatorade Athlete of the Year.
