First National Bank/Pizza Hut Masters Challenge

George Miles and Jennifer Davis of First National Bank of Huntsville presented Sam Houston director of athletics Bobby Williams and the Bearkat golf program's coaches Ronnie Choate (men) and Tommy Chain (women) with checks totaling $15,038 this week.
The monies were raised for the SHSU Golf Enrichment Program through the First National Bank of Huntsville / Pizza Hut 2008 Masters Challenge Golf Tournament.
The proceeds from the tournament went to the Lu Ellen Gibbs Endowment and the Bill Gerstenberger Golf Fund.
Sam Houston State has a long tradition of athletic success in men's and women's golf. The Bearkats finished as the runners-up in the Southland Conference in both sports in the spring of 2008.
SHSU men's golf teams have won two Southland Conference championships, two Gulf Star Conference titles and five Lone Star Conference crowns. The Bearkats were NAIA National Champions in 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981 and finished top 10 in NCAA Division II national tournaments in 1984, 1985 and 1986.
Five times, Sam Houston State men's golfers have earn berths in the NCAA Division I regional championship.
Sam Houston won the Southland Conference women's golf championship in 2004 and 2007.
