HUNTSVILLE ? Preston Brown scored 18 points and Ashton Mitchell added 10 to lead Sam Houston State to a 69-60 non-conference men's basketball victory over Jarvis Christian College Saturday night at Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats had to hit six free throws in the final 31 seconds to hold off the pesky Bulldogs from the Red River Conference. Jarvis Christian (6-3) trailed by only four points, 59-55 with 3:49 to play and by five, 63-58 with 51 seconds left.
Mitchell Johnson led the Bulldogs with 12 points. David Green added 10.
Sam Houston (4-5) posted its second victory in a row thanks to a 37-26 advantage on the boards. The Bearkats scored 19 second chance points on 14 offensive rebounds. Brown led Sam Houston with nine boards. The Kats outscored Jarvis Christian 36-26 in the paint.
Jarvis Christan led three times, the last at 9-8 with 14:55 to play in the first half. Sam Houston built a 38-31 halftime lead but could never pull away.
Sam Houston State breaks for finals and will resume play Sunday, Dec. 21, at Louisiana-Lafayette.
