LAFAYETTE, LA ? Ashton Mitchell drove the lane for the winning basket with two seconds remaining to give Sam Houston State a 56-54 come-from-behind victory over Louisiana-Lafayette at the Cajun Dome Sunday night.
The victory is the third in a row for the Bearkats as they evened their record at 5-5. The Kats trailed 31-22 at halftime and were down by 10 points, 34-24 with 17:14 to play.
Mitchell and Corey Allmond led Sam Houston with 17 points each.
Sam Houston began to whittle away at the Cajun lead. Still down by seven, 37-30 with 11:45 left, Corey Allmond began a 14-7 Bearkat run with a three-point basket at 11:30.
Preston Brown, playing much of the second half with four fouls, tied the game for the time, 44-44, with a lay-up at 6:27. The contest was tied again by Mitchell with a pair of free throws, 46-46, with 4:22 to play.
A free throw by DeLuis Ramirez with 3:57 to play gave the Kats their first lead, 47-46 with 3:57. The lead changed hands twice more and there were three more ties before Mitchell's game-winning play.
Ryan McCoy led Louisiana-Lafayette (4-6) with 21 points, going 4-of-7 from three point range. Tyren Johnson added 11 points and Chris Grannigo had 10.
Ramirez scored eight points for the Bearkats. Brown added seven. Ramirez led the Bearkats on the boards with 10 rebounds.
Sam Houston State now takes a three-day Christmas break. Next action for Sam Houston State will be a road contest at Reid Arena in College Station against Texas A&M Sunday, Dec. 28.
Sam Houston returns home to Johnson Coliseum on Tuesday, Dec. 30, to host Northwestern Oklahoma State.
