For the fourth year in a row, Sam Houston State has clinched a Southland Conference post season tournament berth in women's tennis.
The Bearkats, who will be seeded No. 6 in the SLC tournament, will face No. 3 seed Northwestern State at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning at the Schlief Tennis Complex at Stephen F. Austin State.
Sam Houston State tied for fifth place in the final regular season women's tennis standings with Texas-San Antonio and Texas-Arlington. Through the tie-breaker procedure, UTSA received the No. 5 seed and UTA the No. 7.
The Bearkats will be led by Irina Sotnikova and Peta Taylor, juniors from Latvia and Australia, respectively, who have produced outstanding records in singles and won nine of their 10 matches at number one doubles.
"We're excited to have another opportunity to take on Northwestern State," SHSU Head Coach Jim Giachino said. "Three close losses in doubles in conference play are all that seperated us from being 9-2 instead of 6-5. The girls have been working hard since our final regular season match a week ago to get ready for this tournament."
Southeastern Louisiana, who rolled unbeaten 11-0 through the Southland schedule, is the No. 1 seed.
