Bearkats doubles team wins SFA Fall Invitational

Sophomore Giorgia Pozzan and freshman Federica Denti of Sam Houston State teamed to win the number one women's doubles championship at the Stephen F. Austin Fall Invitational Friday and Saturday.
The pair defeated Roxana Enica and Alina Shazkho of SFA 8-2 in the finals. To earn their finals berth, the Italian duo from Sam Houston defeated Susie Slupska and Dana Dennis of Tyler College 8-3 in the quarterfinals and Clara and Merissa Deluca of Texas-El Paso 8-3 in the semifinals.
Denti also advanced to the finals in singles. She defeated Claire Clark of Louisiana-Monroe 6-3 6-2 in the first round and Andrea Giraldo of Texas State 6-2 6-3 in the semifinals. Denti feel to Madelyn Lumpkin of Tyler 6-3 5-7 1-0 (8) in the finals.
Pozzan reached the singles semifinals, defeating Melisa Ashraf of Lamar 6-3 6-1 in the first round before falling to SFA's Shazko in the semifinals 6-4 6-4.
"Both girls played very well at the Stephen F. Austin tournament," SHSU head coach Jim Giachino said. "Fredica's match in the singles finals was a battle and she lost to a really good player in a super tiebreaker after splitting sets. The girls were really solid in winning the doubles title."
