The Bearkats wrapped up a six game fall season that revealed talent from both new and returning players. The 2009-10 SHSU softball team has had a great fall season and has high hopes for the spring season.
Assistant coach Selena Collins is pleased with the way the fall scrimmages played out.
"The season started off slow, but it went well," Collins said. "We had eight scheduled games, but played six due to the rain. We had the chance to observe other pitchers and different players. It is always helpful to play against other teams. We set an early precedence and everyone came out swinging strong."
There are several new freshmen who joined the team this fall. Kim Damian, Mae Nowak, Ashley Isbell and Shelbi Tucker have stood out the most over the fall season. They are expected to make a big impact this spring on the overall success of the team.
"At first Kim came out a little rusty as all of the new players usually do, but she has really adapted to her role and has a great offensive and defensive stance. She is not afraid to dive if she needs to," Collins said. "Mae is a really high energy, go-getter who slings a heavy bat. When she is up to bat, you back up. Ashley has a great sense of leadership and is hard working. She definitely makes a difference. Shelbi is probably the most athletic. She is also a hard worker and swings a great bat."
Collins was also excited about the play of the returning players. Junior shortstop Hailey Wiginton is one of the best lead-off hitters with a high batting average. Senior Morgan Mikulin spent parts of the last season injured, but has stepped up as a pitcher this season. Senior first baseman Amy Brown and junior second baseman Whitney Wilson have also shown a great deal of potential for the upcoming spring season.
"Hands down Hailey is a strong player," Collins said. "She is a great leader and is expected to do great over this season. Morgan was injured but has made a strong come back as a pitcher, she swings a really heavy bat. Both Whitney and Amy's defense is solid and their offense is really coming along. I am happy with the hard work that has been shown over the fall season and I am looking forward to the spring season."
The Kats will open the season on Feb. 12 at a tournament held at the University of Houston. The first home game will be on Feb. 17 against Texas A&M.
