After battling the weather, injuries and illness, the Sam Houston State women's tennis team is near full-strength at just the right time.
Southland Conference action begins this weekend as the Bearkats face home dual matches at the McAdams Tennis Center. Sam Houston hosts UTSA on Saturday and A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday. Both matches are at 1 p.m.
Giorgia Pozzan, a sophomore from Lacchiarella, Italy, and the only returning letter winner from last year's squad, has gone 5-1 at number one singles for Sam Houston in non-conference play. She also has paired with Sheridan Currie, freshman from Mount Pleasant, Western Australia, for two wins at number one doubles. Currie has been playing number two singles for the Bearkats.
Also playing for the Bearkats are freshmen Tatyana Postnikova of Pretropavlovsk, Kazahkstan; Nadia Dubyanskaya of Togliatty, Samara Oblast in Russia and Federica Denti from Bellano, Italy and junior college transfer Cally Woerner from Boerne.
Denti has yet to see action in dual match play but is expected to make her first appearance in the matches this weekend.
UTSA comes into Saturday's match with a 3-4 season record. The contest will be the first league action for both teams. Sam Houston compiled a 1-5 record in pre-conference play.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is 1-0 in Soutland Conference play and stands 4-2 for the season.
Following this weekend's action, the Bearkats travel to Central Arkansas and Northwestern State for matches Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7, respectively. Next home match for Sam Houston will be a non-conference encounter with Western Michigan on Saturday, March 20.
Admission to Sam Houston tennis matches at McAdams Tennis Center is free.
