With two weeks remaining in the Southland Conference women's tennis season, Sam Houston State faces two critical matches this weekend as the Bearkats play host to Lamar and McNeese State.
The Lamar match will start at 1 p.m. Saturday while the contest with McNeese Sunday gets underway at 11 a.m.
The top eight finishers in the final regular season standings qualify for the 2010 Southland post-season tournament at the H. E. Butt Tennis Center in Corpus Christi April 23-25.
Coming into Saturday and Sunday, Lamar and Sam Houston are tied for fourth place in the Southland with identical 5-3 league records. McNeese State is one spot back in the standings with a 4-5 mark.
Sam Houston, however, will be playing a player short due to injury and will field only five players, having to default the number six singles and number three doubles before action even begins.
"It's a tough, but we have some young players who are ready to battle," Sam Houston head coach Jim Giachino said. "Both of these are matches that could go right down to the wire."
Sam Houston's freshmen are performing well in Southland Conference action.
Nadya Dubyanskaya is 7-1 playing at the number four and five positions in the Kats' eight league matches. Sheridan Currie and Tatyana Postnikova both are 5-3 in Southland action. Currie has played at three and four while Postnikova has been two or three in the lineup.
Admission to Sam Houston State home women's tennis dual matches is free.
