Sam Houston golf signee wins TJGT event

Drue Thompson, who will play men's golf for Sam Houston State beginning this fall, battled the elements and a grueling two-day tournament schedule to pick up a victory on the Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) June 28-29.
Thompson won the Oakmont Junior Classic at playing on the 6,999-yard course at Oakmont Country Club in Corinth, TX.
Halfway through the tournament's first round, a thunderstorm dumped two inches of rain on the competition. Play resumed the next day with the golfers playing 27 holes on a long day two.
Thompson fired an even par 72 in the first round to trail Corey Bounds (69) by five and Blake Rhodes (71) through 18 holes.
Bounds held a three-stroke lead with seven holes remaining but double bogied on the 10th hole and a bogey on 14.
Thompson posted three birdies in the final round and finished with a winning score card of 72-70--144 to take the title and the AJGA exemption.
In other summer golf action, Justin McKay, who will be a sophomore for the Bearkat men's golf team this fall, qualified for the Texas State Open.
"It's always great to see our young players having good performances in summer amateur golf," Sam Houston State men's golf coach Ronnie Choate said. "We're looking forward to seeing what these young men can do for the orange and white this upcoming season."
