Women's golf finish as runners-up in first tournament

Fort Worth - Shelby Hardy and Meghan Musk placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the individual standings to lead the Sam Houston women's golf squad to a runner-up team finish in the Bearkats' first tournament of the 2010-11 season Tuesday.
Sam Houston fired a team score of 293-294-298--885 to finish 13 strokes behind the host team at the University of North Texas WorldLink Classic held on the par 72, 6,489-yard course at Champions Circle Golf Club.
North Texas fired a team score of 297-291-284--872. Sam Houston led the Eagles by one stroke coming into the final round but couldn't keep pace with the torrid four-under par 284 UNT fired Tuesday.
With a final round 298, the Bearkats finished 16 strokes ahead of the third place Lamar Cardinals. Lamar totaled 901, followed by Houston Baptist 909, A&M-Corpus Christi 913, Bowling Green 924, Oklahoma City 936, Redlands 937, McLennan 940, Texas-Pan American 942, Louisiana-Monroe 945, Stephen F. Austin 965 and Centenary 1,021.
Susanan Grunden of Bowling Green was the individual medalist champion with a 54-hole total of 69-71-70--210. Kelsey Kipp of North Texas (71-70-70--211) and Julie Aime of Lamar (74-71-69--214) placed second and third.
Hardy was fourth with a 73-69-73--215 total while Musk placed fifth posting a 69-75-74--218.
Other Sam Houston results included Meghann Stevens 10th 74-75-76--225, Kirsten Spittler 20th 77-75-78--230, Landa Stewart 30th 80-79-75--234 and, competiting as an individual only, Jessica Borth 34th 77-76-82--235.
