
Currie/Jagau doubles team advances

FORT WORTH - Sheridan Currie and Imke Jagau reached the semifinals of the consolation doubles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional tournament hosted by TCU.
Currie and Jagau lost Friday in their opening round of doubles, falling to Elena Kordalnimi and Alina Shazko of Stephen F. Austin 8-1. But the pair bounced back to defeat Christina Foote and Lucia Smalzyte of UT-Arlington 8-3 in the first round of the consolation draw.
Malin Anderson and Wanda Beguelin of UT-Pan American defaulted to the Bearkats in the second round to put the Bearkat duo into the semifinals.
The Sam Houston team fell 8-4 in the semifinals to the University of Houston pairing of Giorgia Pozzan and Bryony Hunter.
Three of the four Bearkats entered in the ITA Regionals won their first round singles matches.
Currie defeated Reetta Ray of UT-Pan American 6-0 6-0 before falling to Maria Rmoero of UT-Arlington 6-1 6-1.
Jagau knocked off Smalzyte 6-3 6-1 in the first round before falling to tournament No. 4 seed Diana Nakic of Baylor 6-2 6-3.
Isabel Bos defeated Gabi Fernandez of TCU 6-3 6-2 in the first round before falling to Nadia Lee of North Texas 6-3 6-0.
Natalie Petaia lost in her first round match, falling to Giada D'Ortona of UT-Arlington 2-6 6-2 6-1. In the consolation singles Petaia defeated Gabi Vasquez of UTEP 1-6 6-1 1-0 (16) in the second round. Petaia withdrew from the singles due to injury.
Bos and Petaia lost in doubles to Margaret Fernandez and Windy Welch 8-6 in the championship first round and Kseniya Bardabush and Valentina Starkova of North Texas in the consolation.
