Corpus Christi - Down eight points with 7:47 to play, the Sam Houston women finished with a 19-5 run to hand A&M-Corpus Christi a 76-70 Southland Conference basketball loss Saturday night.
The comeback for a victory was the third in three games for the Bearkats who upped their season record to 14-11 and lead the league's West Division with an 8-3 mark.
Khamra Echolls was the Kats' top scorer with 20 points. Sequeena Thomas added 17 and pulled down 10 rebounds. Britni Martin totaled 16 points.
A&M-Corpus Christi (2-21, 0-10) was led by Ashley Darley and Taryn Gregory with 14 points each. The game was tied 10 times. Sam Houston led at halftime 33-31 and went up by six 53-47 on a basket by Thomas with 12:45 to play.
After the ninth tie of the contest, Corpus Christi went on a 8-0 run to build a 65-57 lead. A three-point play by Terrah Austin with 5:42 to go started the Bearkat rally. Another layup by Austin with 3:16 to play gave Sam Houston the lead to stay 70-68 with 3:16 to go.
Sam Houston's inside game was impressive as the Bearkats outscored the Islanders 36-16 in the paint.
The Bearkat women's basketball team returns to Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 19, when they play host to Lamar University at a 2 p.m. contest.
