Kats Sixth At Arkansas State

No. 4-ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore defeated Sam Houston's No. 5 ranked women's bowling squad twice Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Mid-Winter Classic in Jonesboro, Ark.
The losses, both by scores of four games to one in best-of-seven bracket Baker play, gave the Bearkats a 7-6 record in the tournament hosted the past three days at the Jonesboro Bowling Center by Arkansas State.
No. 6 Vanderbilt defeated No. 8 Arkansas State in the finals as Vandy and the Red Wolves claimed first and second place, respectively. No. 7 Central Missouri defeated No. 9 Nebaska in the third and fourth place playoff.
Sam Houston finished sixth in the event. The Bearkats picked up some outstanding victories in the competition, however.
On day one, SHSU earned their third victory of the year over Arkansas State by a 1043-1022 margin. On Saturday, the Bearkats defeated No. 1 Valparaiso 983-885 and No. 8 Nebraska 978-904.
"Today was a much better day for us all around," Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen. "We were able to do what we did today because we did it as one group collectively and it was a much needed boost of confidence going in to tomorrow's match play."
The 7-6 record at the Mid-Winter Invitational gives the Bearkats a 47-19 overall record for the season.
"We have a group that doesn't quit," Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. "They are pushing each other in the direction we need to go in. As long as we can manage our emotions and stay focused I feel very positive about what's to come."
Lisa MacAllister led SHSU in Saturday's traditional team matches with a 204.75 average. Neishka Cardona posted a 198.2 mean while Michelle Secours produced a 193.2 average.
The tournament was the first of the 2012 spring semester schedule. Last fall, Sam Houston won the Kat Klash Classic in Huntsville and placed third among top fields at both the Greater Ozark Invitational and the New Jersey Jamboree.
The Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro is one of two tournaments in which the Bearkat bowlers will compete during January. Next up will be the Big Red Invitational hosted by the University of Nebraska in Lincoln Jan. 19-21.
