With a 54-hole total of 290-287-274--851, the Sam Houston State men's golf team earned its second intercollegiate tournament championship of the 2011-12 season Tuesday at the Texas State Jim West Intercollegiate.
The event was held on the par 72, 6,870-yard course at Victoria Country Club Sunday through Tuesday.
During the fall semester, the Bearkats won the team championship at the Harold Funston Invitational in Huntsville.
Traililng Idaho by six strokes going into Tuesday's final round, the Bearkats fired an 18-hole total nine strokes or more better than any of the other 11 teams in the field.
Stephen F. Austin was the team runner-up with an 863 total, followed by Texas State and UTEP tied for third with 865, Idaho 866, Houston-Victoria 872, CSU-Fullerton 873, UTSA 882, Houston Baptist 887, Rice 892, Nicholls State 897 and McNeese State 907.
Sam Houston's Garrett Drive was the runner-up in the individual medalist competition with a 72-73-63--208. Mitchell McLeroy of SFA won the individual championship wtih a 67-70-70--207 showing.
Other Sam Houston finishes and totals were Scott Kelly fifth 73-70-69--212, Justin McKay 71-73-7--217 and James Glenn 74-71-72 tied for 14th, Jordan McColl 74-76-70--220 and Blaine Weiterman 75-76-69--220 tied for 26th.
